How to Split a PDF Into Pages, Ranges or Single Files
You have a 60-page PDF and need three pages of it. Or you scanned a stack of receipts into one file and now each receipt has to go to a different person. Or a client wants only the signature page back. The task is simple, but a lot of online tools turn it into an upload, a queue and a prompt to create an account.
MergeDoc has two split tools, and they answer different questions. This guide explains which one to pick, how the page-range syntax works, and the small details that save you a failed attempt.
Two ways to split a PDF: ranges versus single pages
The first tool is Split PDF. You type the pages you want, for example 1-3,5, and it produces one new PDF containing exactly those pages. The ranges are 1-indexed and inclusive, so 1-3 means pages 1, 2 and 3. Commas separate groups.
The second is Split PDF into Pages. You give it a file and it produces one PDF per page. A 12-page file becomes 12 files named yourfile-page-1.pdf through yourfile-page-12.pdf.
People searching for "split pdf into pages" usually mean the second. People searching for "extract pages from pdf" usually mean the first. If you are not sure, ask what you want at the end: one file with a subset, or many files?
How to split a PDF into single pages
- Open Split PDF into Pages.
- Click the drop area and choose your PDF, or drag the file onto it.
- Click Split into individual pages.
- Wait for the downloads. The page count appears in the confirmation message.
Because each page lands as a separate download, some browsers ask whether you want to allow multiple downloads from the site. Say yes. If a very long PDF produces more downloads than you want to deal with, extract the part you need with the range tool instead.
How to extract specific pages or a page range
- Open Split PDF.
- Choose your PDF.
- In Pages to extract, type the pages. Examples:
1-3,5for pages 1 to 3 plus page 5;7for a single page;10-is not supported, so write the actual end page, such as10-24. - Click Split PDF. The result downloads as
yourfile-split.pdf.
Two behaviours are worth knowing, because they come from how the ranges are processed. First, pages come out in ascending order regardless of how you typed them, so 5,1 gives you page 1 then page 5. Second, duplicates are collapsed, so 1-3,2 still yields three pages. A range that runs past the end is clipped to the last page rather than causing an error.
If you need pages in a custom order, extract first and then use Reorder Pages, where you can move and delete pages visually.
Why split instead of printing or screenshotting
Printing selected pages to a "Save as PDF" printer works, but it rasterizes some content and can change fonts, margins and file size. Screenshots lose text entirely. Copying pages into a new file keeps the original text layer, so the recipient can still search and select. That matters for contracts, invoices and anything someone may need to copy a number out of.
- Smaller files to send. An email limit is easier to meet when you send the four relevant pages instead of the whole 200-page document.
- Less exposure. Sharing only the pages a person needs is a sensible privacy habit. Remember that the original is still on your disk, untouched.
- Cleaner workflows. One page per file makes it easy to name, sort and file each page in the right folder.
- No software to install. Everything runs in the browser tab.
Where current tools fall short
Many split tools work by sending your file to a server, splitting it there, and sending the pieces back. That is fine for a lunch menu and uncomfortable for a payslip, a medical form or a contract. Other common friction points are daily limits on files or pages, a sign-up wall before the download, a watermark on free output, and download links that expire.
MergeDoc reads the PDF in your browser with a JavaScript library, copies the pages and hands the result back as a download. There is no upload step, so there is no queue and no retention policy to read. The trade-off is that very large files depend on your device's memory, and there are no cloud features such as saving to a drive or sharing a link. For the privacy side of that choice, read Is it safe to upload confidential PDFs?.
Everyday use cases
- Scanned receipts. One scan with eight receipts becomes eight files, each ready to attach to an expense line.
- Contract signature page. Extract the last page, send it to the signer, and merge the signed page back later with Merge PDF.
- Study material. Pull chapter 4 out of a 300-page textbook scan to read on your phone.
- Boarding passes and tickets. A booking confirmation with four tickets can be separated so each traveller gets their own.
- Removing the cover letter. Extract pages 2 to the end to drop a first page you do not want to share.
Splitting large or scanned PDFs
A few situations need a little planning. A scanned document is usually one large image per page, so each extracted page can still be a megabyte or more. If your goal is a small email attachment, splitting out fewer pages helps more than anything else, and the image tools can shrink the scans themselves if you convert pages to pictures first.
A very long PDF takes longer to process because the whole file is read into your browser's memory. If a 500-page file stalls on a phone, try it on a laptop, or cut it in two with ranges first. Close other heavy tabs before you start.
When you need more than one chunk, think about how many files you want at the end. For three chunks of a 90-page report, running the range tool three times (1-30, 31-60, 61-90) is quicker than splitting into 90 files and merging 30 back together. For a stack of one-page items, such as scanned receipts, the single-page tool is the right call.
Finally, decide on a naming scheme before you start. Downloads are named after the source file with a suffix, so renaming them immediately to something meaningful, such as the date or client, keeps your downloads folder usable. If you plan to combine pieces later, put a number at the front of each name so they sort in order when you select them for Merge PDF.
Tips and mistakes to avoid
- Unlock first. An encrypted PDF cannot be split. Use the Remove password mode in Protect PDF if you know the password.
- Check page numbers against the viewer. Printed page numbers in a document often differ from the PDF's own numbering because of cover pages and roman-numeral front matter. The tool counts physical pages from 1.
- Do not expect bookmarks to survive. Copied pages go into a fresh document.
- Split a copy, not your only original. Downloads never overwrite your file, but keep the habit anyway.
- Scanned pages stay large. A page that is one big image remains one big image. Splitting does not shrink it.
- Name the pieces. Rename downloads straight away, before ten files called
page-1pile up in your folder.

Frequently asked questions
- How do I split a PDF into individual pages for free?
- Open the [Split PDF into Pages](/split-pdf-pages) tool, drop in your file and click the button. Every page is saved as its own PDF named like `report-page-1.pdf`. Nothing is uploaded, so there is no sign-up and no size cap beyond what your browser can hold in memory.
- Can I split a PDF into separate files by page range, like 1-10 and 11-20?
- Yes, but one run produces one file. Enter `1-10` in the [Split PDF](/split) tool, download the result, then run it again with `11-20`. Repeat for each chunk you need.
- What is the difference between splitting into pages and extracting pages?
- Splitting into pages gives you one file per page, so a 40-page PDF becomes 40 downloads. Extracting pages means you name the pages you want, such as `2-4,9`, and get a single new PDF containing only those pages.
- Why does my password-protected PDF fail to split?
- The tools cannot read pages from an encrypted file. Remove the password first with the Remove password mode on the [Protect PDF](/protect) page, then split the unlocked copy.
- Will splitting a PDF reduce the quality?
- No. Pages are copied across as they are, not re-rendered into images, so text stays selectable and vector graphics stay sharp. The file size of each piece depends on what that page contains, such as embedded fonts and images.
- Does splitting keep bookmarks and links?
- Do not count on it. The tools build a fresh document from copied pages, and document-level extras such as the bookmark outline are generally not carried over. Check the result if your PDF relies on bookmarks.
